Toro Y Moi’s new single “Freaking Out” has a definite new jack swing vibe. Other than that, we’ll just have to be content with the current resurgence of 80s tinged R&B in the indie music community (Blood Orange, How to Dress Well, etc.) and hope that somewhere in Oakland/Compton/Brooklyn/Jersey, a 19 year old kid with an incredible voice is confidently making his way through a stack of his 40ish mom’s Belle Biv Devoe albums.
It’s so weird to think thatJay Reatard left us nearly two years ago. Time flies fast. Here’s a guy who reflected the punk ethos in perhaps its purest, sloppiest form, a mix of lyrical dissonance and clarity of lo-fi musical vision always full of surprises. I only saw Jay live once — at the 2008 Pitchfork Music Festival, and I felt bad about saying it then, but he sucked, for reasons that weren’t his fault. His style of fast and furious, on a dime song-switching doesn’t translate that well to large outdoor stages. As huge as he sounds on record (see “My Shadow,” above), his super-creative project was at the same time insular. Which means that even when he’s screaming and his guitars are screeching, you’re seeing one dude’s small little world, turned up to 11. And what a fascinating world it was. — Ernie @ SFB
